WEVA Intermediate Meeting has collected equine veterinary specialists from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, France and different regions of Russia. It has been held on 30 October – 2 November 2018 in one of the most beautiful and historical places of the world – the city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan.

Organized by Ministry of Highest and Secondary Education of Uzbekistan, State Veterinary Committee of Uzbekistan, Samarkand Veterinary Institute, Russian Equine Veterinary Association and World Equine Veterinary Association the Intermediate Meeting of WEVA has got the status of “International Conference on Actual Problems and Perspectives of Equine Veterinary Medicine”. The event has been generously hosted by Samarkand Veterinary Institute. During 3 days of the Conference there were around 300 veterinary specialists registered including vet students of the 5th course of the Institute.

The venue of the conference has appeared thanks to few years negotiations of Kirill Manuilov, President of REVA and Chief Vet of Moscow Hippodrome, with Uzbek colleague Professor Bakhtior Dalievich Narziyev and famous textile company SAG Gilamlari supporting equestrian industry of Uzbekistan.

We were 5 speakers representing WEVA: Richard Corde and Eric Richard from France; Kirill Manuilov, Anna Shafranovskaya and me from Russia. The first day of the conference has started with brief presentation about the WEVA activity around the globe which has been given by me. Our first speaker Richard Corde made very detailed oral presentation “Pre-sale inspection of horse” which has been further supported by practical workshop on the third day of the conference and caused a huge interest among the participants. Real interest and storm of questions appeared during Eric Richard’s presentations: “Respiratory pathophysiology of the (athletic) horse”, “How to sample respiratory fluids on the horse (TW & BAL)”, “Environment as risk-factor of equine asthma”,
“Diagnostic methods for exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH)”. Kirill Manuilov has made a very detailed presentation on the topic of “Equine Dentistry”. Anna Shafranovskaya has shared her big experience on “Equine physiotherapy methods”. Besides it, Anna was our English-Russian interpreter during all the days of the conference what was a very big labor. My own second talk touched the main aspects of OIE and FEI requirements in terms of international movement of horses.

During the days of the conference we visited all the departments, research laboratory and anatomy museum of Samarkand Veterinary Institute and one of the best equestrian clubs of Uzbekistan owned by SAG Gilamlari.

In addition to huge hospitality of hosts of the event we had amazing free time while visiting famous all over the world historical places of Samarkand such as Registan, Gur-e-Amir, Bibi-Khanym Mosque, Sahi-i-Zinda, Al Bukhariy.

Companies SAG Gilamlari, Boehringer Ingelheim and Zabegina have become sponsors of this great WEVA event which would not happen without this support.

WEVA Intermediate Meeting in Samarkand has really served to the aim of development of post-diploma education of equine vets and students and, of course, has become as one more step to the WEVA recognition around the world.
