Raquel received her DVM degree in 1991 from School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the São Paulo State University – Brazil (FMVZ/UNESP/ Botucatu). She then received further training in Large Animal Surgery during two years and finished her residency at the same University. Following this, she worked as an equine medicine specialist with jumping, dressage and endurance horses. Raquel earned her Master’s degree in Veterinary Surgery and her PhD title in Clinical Sciences at São Paulo University (USP) in the late nineties. More recently, she completed a postdoctoral degree in Molecular Biology at Escola Paulista de Medicina – UNIFESP. 

She has held several positions in the national association (Brazilian Association of Equine Veterinarians – ABRAVEQ) and some positions in the international association, e.g. as Head of Local Organizing Committee of the 11th WEVA Congress in 2009 and Regional Ambassador for Brazil and South America of WEVA for 2015-2018.

Also, she worked as an equine veterinarian at the Rio Olympics, which were held in Rio de Janeiro- Brazil in 2016. She is dedicated about providing opportunities in further education to colleagues in Brazil and educating students about equine veterinary practice.

She is currently a Professor and Head of the Equine Internal Medicine Service at the Veterinary Hospital of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science /USP – São Paulo, and has focused her research work mainly on equine osteoarthritis and other joint diseases, physiotherapy, musculoskeletal diseases and laminitis.

Raquel is a practitioner passionate about kung fu, yoga and swimming. She loves sun, beach and nature; is married to a veterinary surgeon and has two sons.
