Gary Norwood

Past President
(United States)

Dr. Gary Norwood, who sadly passed away on 1 April 2025, was a deeply respected figure in the global equine veterinary community and a Past President of WEVA. He was first appointed to the WEVA Board in 2001 and brought with him decades of experience and dedication to equine health.

Gary also served as Past President of both the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and the Texas Equine Veterinary Association (TEVA), of which he was a founding member. In 1980, he was named Louisiana Equine Veterinarian of the Year, and he served as Chairman of the LVMA Equine Committee.

A veteran of the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, Gary served as a Captain in Vietnam, where he led one of the first Pacification programs in Montagnard villages, treating sick cattle and helping rural communities.

Following a distinguished 40-year career as a Thoroughbred racetrack practitioner, Gary retired, though he remained a beloved mentor and advocate in the profession. His contributions to equine veterinary medicine, both in the U.S. and globally through WEVA, continue to inspire.

He is fondly remembered for his wisdom, service, and unwavering commitment to equine welfare.
